PRACTICAL GUIDES
RAG Chatbot Validation: Test Answers, Sources and Access.
Validate RAG chatbot answers for source support, retrieval quality, current policies and access rules. Test unsupported claims and missing information.
The short answer
RAG chatbot validation evaluates retrieval-augmented generation: whether the system retrieves authorised, relevant sources and produces answers those sources support. Validate a knowledge-based AI chatbot by checking whether it finds the right approved information, supports its claims with that information and admits when the answer is unavailable. Review source quality, access rules and business correctness separately from how fluent the answer sounds.
What does RAG chatbot validation check?
A chatbot may attach a document link while giving an answer the document does not support. It may also faithfully repeat an outdated policy. Check both the connection between answer and source and whether that source is the right one to use.
RAG means retrieving information before generating an answer. It can help a chatbot use company knowledge, but retrieval and answer generation can fail in different ways. A reviewer needs to see which information was available, which passage was retrieved and which claims appeared in the response.
Use questions that reveal useful differences
In this invented support scenario, a business changes its return window. A good test set includes a question answered by the current policy, a request with missing purchase details and a request the policy cannot answer. It also includes an older document with a conflicting window. No customer system was evaluated for this example.
- Can the answer be supported by the current approved policy?
- Does it distinguish policy facts from assumptions?
- Does it ask for missing information instead of inventing it?
- Does it decline or escalate a question outside the available knowledge?
- Can a user retrieve information they are not allowed to access?
Separate finding information from answering correctly
If the correct source was not retrieved, investigate the knowledge collection and retrieval step. If it was retrieved but the response contradicts it, investigate answer generation. If the response accurately repeats a bad source, fix the content and ownership process.
Google’s grounding documentation describes checking whether answer claims are supported by supplied reference text. That is a useful distinction, but agreement with a reference is not a general guarantee of truth, completeness or permission to disclose it.
Make the review understandable to the business
For every question, retain the approved answer criteria, source version, retrieved passages, actual response and review decision. Use clear labels such as supported, unsupported, incomplete or unable to assess. Have a knowledgeable owner review answers where wording affects a real business decision.
Repeat checks after knowledge updates, retrieval changes or model changes. Include follow-up questions that refer to earlier messages. Report failures and unanswered questions alongside any aggregate result so a strong average does not hide a critical gap.
Use a scoped first assessment
Start with one knowledge area, such as product setup or an internal operating procedure. VisiFlo can discuss how to check answer evidence, missing information and human handovers. Sensitive or high-impact use cases need the appropriate specialist review; a chatbot content check does not replace it.
Common questions
Does adding company documents stop a chatbot inventing answers?
No. The system can retrieve the wrong passage, misread a source or fill a gap with an unsupported claim. Test the source selection and the answer, including cases where the correct response is to ask or escalate.
What should a chatbot do when its documents disagree?
Follow an agreed policy for authoritative and current sources. When the conflict cannot be resolved from that policy, explain the uncertainty and route the question to a person rather than silently choosing an answer.
