PRACTICAL GUIDES
Custom AI API Workflow Testing: Retries and Final Outcomes.
Test custom AI and API workflows for data mappings, permissions, retries and partial failures. Verify the final business record, beyond HTTP success.
The short answer
Test a custom AI workflow by following a request across the model, APIs, web services and final business state. Check identifiers, permissions, data mappings, retries and partial failures. An HTTP success response or a convincing AI message does not by itself establish that the intended business change occurred.
What does custom AI API workflow testing verify?
A workflow might use a private model gateway, an internal API and a legacy booking service. It does not need to use a recognised agent platform to have testable business rules. Start with what goes in, the permitted actions and the result that should exist afterwards.
In this illustrative booking scenario, an assistant checks availability, creates a booking and sends a confirmation. Success means one booking for the authorised person and slot, with an accurate confirmation. No customer integration was tested to produce this example.
Check the handovers between systems
A correct decision can become a wrong action if a customer identifier, time zone or status is mapped incorrectly. Agree the request and response contract for each connection, then inspect how the next step interprets it.
- Does the action target the exact authorised record?
- Are dates, time zones, units and amounts interpreted consistently?
- Are missing or invalid fields rejected rather than guessed?
- Does a response mean accepted, completed or still pending?
- Can the caller inspect the final record with suitable permission?
Treat retries as a business behaviour
If the booking succeeds but its response is lost, repeating the create request can make a second booking. Check the service’s documented way to recognise repeated operations and verify it with controlled failures. Some APIs support an idempotency key: an identifier used to recognise a retry.
Stripe documents this pattern for its own API, including conditions and version-specific behaviour. That is an example, not a guarantee for your booking or CRM service. Confirm the actual service’s support, expiry rules and behaviour when the same identifier is reused with different data.
Plan for work that only partly completes
A booking may exist even though sending the confirmation failed. The recovery should match that state: retry the message where appropriate, rather than create the booking again. If the final state cannot be established, route it for review instead of reporting success.
Test an unavailable dependency, a slow response, an invalid response and the same event delivered twice. Use test doubles or authorised sandboxes where necessary, and record which parts were simulated. Include cleanup so test data does not affect later runs.
Ask for a report that follows the whole task
For every case, record the starting state, request, workflow version, action attempts, results and final state. Explain the business impact of a gap and name the next action. Repeat important checks after an API, model or workflow change.
VisiFlo can discuss custom AI agents, APIs, web services and connected internal apps. Where direct access is unsuitable, we can discuss reviewing redacted examples or execution evidence. Assessment capability and limits are agreed first; naming a technology does not imply an existing integration.
Common questions
Can VisiFlo assess an AI workflow built entirely in-house?
Custom systems are welcome for a scope discussion. Useful inputs include the business task, expected outcomes, a description of the connections and suitable test access or redacted evidence. The checks depend on what can be observed and authorised.
Does a successful API response mean the AI task succeeded?
Not necessarily. Confirm what that response promises and inspect the resulting state. The wrong record can be updated successfully, or a request can be accepted while the underlying work is still pending.
